SONY: Financial Results Q3 2020


Today, SONY Corp. ($SNE) announced financial results for the third quarters of the fiscal year 2020 (period from October 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020).

The Japanese company has reached a new record, due to the Games and Network Services division (better known as PlayStation and related services) which alone has buffered the barely sufficient results of Sony Music and the negatives from Sony Pictures, Sony Electronics and Imaging & Sensing Solutions, compared to the previous year in the same quarter.

  • Sales and Operating Revenue 2.696,5 bln ¥ +9% YoY
  • Operative income 359,2 bln ¥ +20% YoY
  • Net revenue 477,4 bln ¥ +54%
  • Net stokeholder 371,9 bln ¥ +62%

Game & Network Services

  • Sales 883.2 bln ¥
  • Operative income 80.2 mld ¥

G&NS FY2020 Forecast

  • Sales 2,630 mld ¥ (+1%)
  • Operative income 340 mld ¥ (1%)

During the webcast Q&A session, SONY has declared that in the December period

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales reached around 4,1 mln units sold
  • PlayStation user gameplay time +30% YoY
  • 85% PS5 users enabled PlayStation Plus
  • PS5 launch generated 40% sales YoY increase that boosted sales of hardware, software and add-on content

SONY has informed also that

  • PS5 sold 4.5 mln units in less than 2 months
  • Aims to meet PS5 demand by March 2021 and expects to reach 7.5 mln units distributed worldwide
  • The PS5 price has been a strategic choice that setting it lower than production costs
  • PS4 sold 1.4 mln units
  • Sony earned ¥ 2.7 tln in revenue, up 9% YoY
  • Sony registered a profit of $ 10 bln from the games and anime divisions
